Assessment-led care
Testing with a clear reason and a next step.
Start with a clinical question
Blood tests can provide information to help a clinician investigate a concern or monitor an existing condition. Different tests answer different questions, so the starting point is a discussion of your symptoms, history, medicines and goals. A clinician can explain which tests may be useful and how the results could affect your care.
Blood testing at Phoenix is arranged through a health assessment, rather than as a standalone booking. Personalised blood testing forms part of the Foundational Health Assessment and Foundational Health Assessment Plus, with tests selected by your GP.
Know what is being arranged
Before proceeding, ask which tests have been requested, whether you need a referral, where the sample will be collected and who will receive the results. Confirm the pathology provider and collection location with the team; collection arrangements should not be assumed from the Phoenix address.
If you have previous blood results or a request from another clinician, bring these to your health assessment. Your Phoenix GP can consider them when deciding which tests are relevant.
Make room for interpretation
A result is most useful when discussed in the context of the reason for testing and your broader health. Ask how and when you will receive an explanation, who will organise follow-up and whether a review appointment has a separate fee. Bring previous relevant results to that discussion if requested.
Depending on the findings and your goals, your clinician may discuss other support. You can explore dietitian appointments and exercise physiology, but the appropriate next step should follow your individual review, rather than a number viewed on its own.
Your questions.
Can I book blood tests on their own?
No. Blood testing at Phoenix is accessed through a health assessment. The Foundational Health Assessment and Foundational Health Assessment Plus include personalised blood testing, with your GP selecting the tests appropriate to your circumstances.
Where is the sample collected?
Confirm the collection provider, location, opening arrangements and whether an appointment is required before travelling. The collection and the clinical review may be separate steps. If accessibility, needle anxiety or previous difficulties with blood collection are concerns, mention these when arranging your visit.
Do I need to fast or change anything beforehand?
Preparation depends on the tests ordered. Ask the requesting clinician or collection provider for your instructions, including any timing, food, drink or medicine considerations. Do not make changes based only on general online information. Healthdirect explains how to prepare questions for a blood test.
What will it cost?
The team will explain your assessment’s inclusions and confirm any additional pathology costs before you proceed. Costs depend on the tests requested and your circumstances.
How will I receive my results?
Your Phoenix team will explain how and when your results will be reviewed as part of your assessment. Ask about expected timeframes and any follow-up needed after that review.
Which health assessment includes blood testing?
The Foundational Health Assessment and Foundational Health Assessment Plus include personalised blood testing. Both bring your results into a broader medical and movement assessment, with a plan developed around your goals.
