What is a DEXA scan?

DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. It uses low-dose X-rays to assess body fat, lean tissue and bone mineral content, giving you more detail than weight or BMI alone.

Why is it useful?

A DEXA scan provides a baseline for understanding your body composition. It can help inform nutrition and exercise goals and, when repeated under consistent conditions, track changes in fat and lean tissue over time.

A scan in 5–10 minutes

You lie still on an open scanning bed while the scanner passes over your body. The scan itself generally takes 5–10 minutes. Allow additional time for preparation and any discussion of your results; our team will confirm the full appointment length when you book.

Your body composition, in detail

Your assessment provides a breakdown of body fat and lean tissue, helping you understand what sits behind the number on the scales. Lean tissue includes muscle and other non-fat soft tissues; it is not a direct measurement of muscle alone.

A straightforward individual appointment

You can book a standalone DEXA scan without joining a gym or health program. A trained member of our team will guide you through the scan. Ask about preparation and how your results will be explained when you book.

Your questions

Is this the same as the Phoenix Baseline?

No. The $350 Phoenix Baseline combines a DEXA scan with health measurements and time with your doctor. A standalone body composition service has its own scope and fee.

When would a follow-up scan be useful?

A follow-up can help assess changes in body composition as part of your nutrition, exercise or weight-management plan. The timing depends on your goals and clinical circumstances. Consistent preparation and scanning conditions help make comparisons more useful.

How can I arrange a scan?

Call 02 4250 7373 or use the DEXA enquiry option. The team will confirm availability, the appropriate appointment and any preparation before you attend.
