The Number on the Scales Isn't the Whole Story

The Number on the Scales Isn't the Whole Story

Why a DEXA scan can reveal far more than your weight ... and change the way you think about your health.

Two people step onto a set of scales.

Both weigh 82 kilograms.

According to the scales, they're exactly the same.

But one has a healthy amount of muscle, low levels of visceral fat and strong bones. The other has significantly less muscle, higher levels of body fat and an increased risk of developing chronic disease.

The scales can't tell the difference.

And that's why weight, on its own, only tells a small part of your health story.

We've Been Measuring the Wrong Thing

For decades, we've been conditioned to judge our health by a single number.

We celebrate when it goes down and worry when it goes up.

But weight doesn't tell us what we're carrying.

Have you gained muscle through strength training?

Are you losing fat while becoming stronger?

Is the weight around your waist sitting deep around your organs rather than just under your skin?

The scales simply can't answer those questions.

Looking Beyond Body Weight

At Phoenix Health Co, we want people to understand their health, not just monitor their weight.

That's why a DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan forms part of our Foundational Health Assessment.

Originally developed to measure bone density, modern DEXA technology also provides one of the most accurate assessments of body composition available.

Rather than simply telling you how much you weigh, it shows what your body is made of.

This includes:

  • Lean muscle mass

  • Body fat percentage

  • Visceral fat surrounding your internal organs

  • Bone mineral density

  • How muscle and fat are distributed throughout your body

It provides a far more meaningful picture of your health than a set of bathroom scales ever could.

Why Muscle Matters

One of the biggest surprises for many people is how much muscle they've lost without realising it.

From around our thirties onwards, muscle naturally begins to decline unless we actively work to maintain it.

Muscle isn't simply about strength or appearance.

It plays an important role in:

  • Supporting a healthy metabolism

  • Maintaining mobility and balance

  • Protecting bone health

  • Improving insulin sensitivity

  • Supporting healthy ageing and independence

If your focus is simply losing kilograms, you may also be losing valuable muscle.

That's rarely the goal.

Not All Fat Is Equal

Most people are familiar with body fat.

Fewer have heard of visceral fat

Unlike the fat you can pinch under your skin, visceral fat surrounds important organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines.

Higher levels are associated with an increased risk of conditions including:

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Heart disease

  • High blood pressure

  • Fatty liver disease

You don't necessarily have to appear overweight to carry excess visceral fat.

That's another reason why weight alone can be misleading.

A Better Way to Measure Progress

Imagine beginning a health program and seeing almost no change on the scales.

Many people would assume nothing is working.

But a DEXA scan might reveal you've gained two kilograms of muscle, lost two kilograms of body fat and significantly reduced your visceral fat.

That's extraordinary progress.

The scales simply wouldn't show it.

Health Isn't About Chasing a Number

At Phoenix Health Co, we believe understanding your health is the first step towards improving it.

The goal isn't simply to weigh less.

It's to become stronger.

To reduce disease risk.

To improve fitness.

To age well.

To build a healthier body for the decades ahead.

Sometimes, the most important health changes aren't reflected by the number staring back at you from the scales.

They're happening beneath the surface.

Thinking about understanding your health beyond your weight?

The Phoenix Foundational Health Assessment and the Phoenix Foundational Gym offer includes a comprehensive DEXA scan to help you understand where you are today ... and how to optimise your health for the future.

Because the number on the scales is only the beginning of the story.
