Assessment-led care
A heart recording, considered in context.
What an ECG can tell your clinician
An electrocardiogram, or ECG, records the heart’s electrical activity. It provides information about the heart’s rate and rhythm at the time of the recording and can contribute to a clinical assessment. Your clinician decides whether it is relevant to the question being investigated and how to interpret the result alongside your symptoms, history and other findings.
An ECG is one source of information, rather than a complete picture of heart health. Discuss why it is being requested and what the result may change about your care.
Start with a health assessment
ECG testing at Phoenix is available as part of a health assessment, rather than as a standalone appointment. It is included in Phoenix Baseline, the Foundational Health Assessment and the Foundational Health Assessment Plus. Our team can help you choose the assessment that suits your goals.
Different cardiac tests have different purposes. A resting ECG, extended monitoring and an exercise stress test are not interchangeable. Ask the team exactly which test is being arranged; this listing should not be assumed to include other forms of cardiac testing.
Understand the review and next steps
Your GP considers the recording alongside your history and assessment findings, explains what it means and discusses any recommended next steps. The team will confirm your assessment appointments and any separate follow-up arrangements.
A GP appointment gives you space to discuss broader concerns and a plan for ongoing care. If you are exploring fitness assessment, Performance Testing is a separate service with its own suitability discussion; an ECG should not be treated as automatic clearance for exercise.
Available through a Phoenix health assessment
Your questions.
Can I book an ECG on its own?
No. ECG testing at Phoenix is accessed through a Phoenix health assessment. It is included in Phoenix Baseline, the Foundational Health Assessment and the Foundational Health Assessment Plus.
Which assessment should I choose?
Phoenix Baseline offers a focused first visit. The Foundational Health Assessment and Foundational Health Assessment Plus offer a more comprehensive assessment and plan. Our team can explain the inclusions and help you choose.
What happens during an ECG?
For a typical resting ECG, small adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin and connected to the recording machine. You are asked to lie still while the tracing is recorded. The team should explain the process and help with any concerns about comfort or privacy. Confirm the test type and appointment length when booking.
How should I prepare?
Ask reception or the clinician for the instructions relevant to your appointment, including suitable clothing and any information about medicines or previous tests. Mention sensitivities to adhesive or concerns about the procedure. Healthdirect explains the different ECG tests; follow the guidance for the test actually arranged for you.
Does a normal result rule out every heart problem?
No single recording answers every clinical question. Some problems may not be present during a short ECG, and your clinician considers the tracing with the rest of your assessment. Ask what the result means in your circumstances and whether further review or another test is recommended.
How does the ECG fit into my assessment?
Your ECG is one part of your Phoenix health assessment. Your GP considers it alongside the other assessment findings and discusses what it means for your care and next steps.
