The Fitness Number That May Predict How Well You'll Age

The Fitness Number That May Predict How Well You'll Age

Why VO₂ max may be one of the most important health measurements you've never heard of.

If someone asked you to predict how long you'll live, what would you look at?

Your cholesterol?

Your blood pressure?

Your weight?

Most people would choose one of those.

But research increasingly suggests there's another measurement that's strongly associated with long-term health, independence and longevity.

It's called VO₂ max.

Most people have never heard of it.

Yet it can tell us an extraordinary amount about how well your heart, lungs and muscles work together and, importantly, how well they're likely to keep working as you age.

So, what is VO₂ max?

In simple terms, VO₂ max measures how effectively your body takes in, transports and uses oxygen during exercise.

Think of it as your body's engine.

The more efficiently your body can deliver oxygen to your muscles and use it, the better your cardiorespiratory fitness.

Elite athletes often talk about VO₂ max because it helps determine sporting performance.

But you don't need to run marathons for it to matter.

In fact, if your goal is simply to stay healthy, active and independent throughout life, it may be one of the most useful fitness measurements available.

Why does it matter?

As we get older, our cardiovascular fitness naturally declines.

Without regular physical activity, that decline can accelerate.

Lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness have been associated with an increased risk of:

  • Heart disease

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Stroke

  • Reduced mobility

  • Falls and frailty

  • Earlier mortality

The encouraging news?

Unlike your age, your VO₂ max is something you can improve.

It's not just for athletes

When people hear "fitness testing", they often imagine elite sport.

That's not what Phoenix Health Co is about.

We're interested in understanding your baseline so we can help you improve it.

Whether you're 35 or 75, your VO₂ max provides valuable insight into your current level of cardiovascular fitness and can help identify opportunities to improve your health over time.

It's not about comparing yourself with elite athletes.

It's about establishing your own benchmark and tracking meaningful progress.

Sometimes small, sustainable improvements in physical activity can lead to significant gains in fitness and overall health.

What about smartwatches?

Many modern smartwatches and fitness trackers now estimate VO₂ max.

These estimates can be useful for monitoring trends over time, particularly when you're using the same device consistently.

However, they're still estimates.

They rely on algorithms and indirect measurements that can be influenced by factors such as heart-rate accuracy, the type of activity being performed and the quality of the data collected.

A formal VO₂ max assessment measures your response to progressively increasing exercise in a controlled environment, providing a more personalised and generally more accurate picture of your cardiorespiratory fitness.

Why we measure it at Phoenix

At Phoenix Health Co, our goal isn't simply to identify disease.

It's to better understand your health before disease develops.

VO₂ max is one important piece of that picture.

Combined with your medical history, blood tests, DEXA body composition scan, movement assessment and other health measures, it helps us build a more complete understanding of your current health and where improvements may be possible.

Our VO₂ max assessments are supervised by an experienced exercise scientist and can be completed on either a treadmill or stationary bike.

Our aim isn't simply to give you a number.

We help you understand what your result means, how it relates to your overall health and fitness, and how you can use it to support your long-term health goals.

The good news

Unlike many health risks, fitness is remarkably responsive to change.

Regular walking.

Strength training.

Cycling.

Swimming.

Even short bursts of higher-intensity exercise, when appropriate, can improve cardiovascular fitness over time.

Every improvement matters.

Because better fitness doesn't just help you live longer.

It helps you live better.

It means having the energy to keep up with your children or grandchildren.

It means climbing stairs without thinking twice.

It means staying independent, active and doing the things you love for as long as possible.

That's what preventative healthcare is really about.

Understanding your fitness is understanding your future

Your weight only tells part of the story.

Your blood tests tell another part.

Your cardiovascular fitness adds another important piece of the puzzle.

As part of the Phoenix Foundational Health Assessment, we assess your fitness alongside advanced health testing to help build a clearer picture of where your health is today—and where it could be tomorrow.

Because living longer is important.

Living well for longer is even better.

Maximal exercise testing may not be suitable for everyone. People with existing medical conditions, symptoms or cardiovascular risk factors should seek appropriate medical advice before undertaking a VO₂ max assessment.

Thinking about understanding your health beyond your weight?

The Phoenix Foundational Health Assessment and the Phoenix Foundational Gym offer includes a comprehensive DEXA scan to help you understand where you are today ... and how to optimise your health for the future.

Because the number on the scales is only the beginning of the story.
