Phoenix Health Co Officially Opens Its Doors

·Phoenix Health Co

Phoenix Health Co has officially opened its doors in Wollongong, marking the beginning of a new approach to preventative health, movement and healthy ageing in the Illawarra.

The official opening brought together healthcare professionals, business leaders, community representatives, partners and supporters to experience Phoenix first-hand and hear from the people behind the vision.

For co-founder Dr Oscar Horky, Phoenix has grown from years of observing both the strengths and limitations of the traditional healthcare system.

His experience in medicine, together with the success of the integrated model developed through Joint Vision Orthopaedic Group, helped shape the idea for a health service that could bring more of the pieces together.

Rather than waiting for illness or injury to dictate someone's health journey, Phoenix has been designed around a simple question:

What if we could intervene earlier?

From Reactive Healthcare to Proactive Health

Much of modern healthcare remains reactive.

People generally enter the system because something hurts, a test result has changed or a condition has already developed.

At Phoenix, the focus is different.

The aim is to better understand an individual's health today, identify areas that may require attention and then create a personalised pathway combining medicine, exercise, nutrition, recovery and behavioural support.

For Oscar, this also means addressing one of the biggest challenges facing patients: Fragmented care.

A person may see their GP, a specialist, physiotherapist, trainer or dietitian, but those professionals do not always operate as part of a genuinely connected team.

Phoenix has been designed to bring those disciplines closer together.

"The opportunity is to move away from fragmented, reactive healthcare and towards a much more connected and proactive approach," Oscar said.

"We want people to understand their health more deeply and then give them the team, information and support to do something meaningful with that knowledge."

Understanding Your Health Before Something Goes Wrong

Central to the Phoenix approach is the Foundational Health Assessment.

Rather than relying on a single measurement or isolated health marker, the assessment provides a deeper picture of an individual's current health and future risk profile.

Phoenix has access to evidence-based diagnostic and assessment tools on site, including DEXA body composition scanning and VO₂ max testing.

These measures can help provide insight into areas such as muscle mass, visceral fat, bone health and cardiovascular fitness.

The information can then be considered alongside medical history, pathology, lifestyle factors and individual goals.

But testing is only the beginning.

The real value comes from translating that information into an individual plan.

Exercise as a Prescription

One of the strongest themes behind Phoenix is the role movement plays in long-term health.

Exercise is increasingly recognised as one of the most powerful tools available for supporting cardiovascular health, maintaining muscle and bone strength, improving metabolic health and helping people remain independent as they age.

That is why movement sits at the centre of the Phoenix model rather than being treated as an optional addition.

Phoenix's medical team works alongside exercise professionals to help create an approach appropriate to the individual, whether someone is beginning exercise for the first time, returning after injury or looking to improve their health and performance.

The Phoenix Movement and Recovery space is led by Head of Movement Angela Saville and includes personalised small-group training, recovery services, sauna and cold plunge, community sessions and run club.

Classes are deliberately limited in size to maintain a high level of coaching and individual support.

One Connected Health Team

Ultimately, what differentiates Phoenix is not any single service.

It is the connection between them.

Medicine.

Movement.

Nutrition.

Recovery.

Behaviour change.

Health information.

Rather than operating independently, the goal is for each element to contribute to an individual's overall health journey.

Phoenix is also developing its digital platform to allow people to retain and access their health information as a portable medical portfolio, helping them better understand and participate in their own care.

The result is intended to be a more individualised approach to preventative health,  one that recognises that the health priorities of a 35-year-old, a 55-year-old and a 75-year-old may be very different.

Building a Healthier Illawarra

The official opening also highlighted another important part of the Phoenix vision: Collaboration.

The evening brought together GPs, specialists, allied health professionals, fitness professionals and representatives from throughout the local business and professional community.

For the Phoenix founders, those relationships will be critical.

No single organisation can solve every aspect of healthcare.

But stronger connections between practitioners, services and the community can create a much more seamless experience for patients.

Phoenix co-founders Oscar Horky, Meghan Dares, Katie Horky and Wynter Dares thanked everyone who attended the opening, along with the growing Phoenix team that has helped bring the concept to life.

"Phoenix is our contribution to a different conversation about health ... one that isn't simply about adding years to life, but about putting more life into those years."

A New Chapter Begins

With Phoenix now open, people can access the service in several ways.

The comprehensive Foundational Health Assessment provides the deepest introduction to the Phoenix model, while individual services including DEXA scanning, VO₂ max testing, allied health and GP consultations are also available.

Phoenix Gym membership is open to the general public and does not require completion of a Foundational Health Assessment.

The gym officially opens on Monday 17 August, with membership numbers and group class sizes deliberately limited to maintain Phoenix's personalised approach.

Whether someone wants to better understand their health, improve their fitness, recover from injury or take a more proactive approach to healthy ageing, the objective is the same:

Know where you are. Understand where you want to go. Build a plan to get there.
